Hobart launches three-year CBD safety liaison trial
Published · Cenlocal summary
Three officers are beginning regular CBD patrols to connect residents, businesses and vulnerable people with support and services.

The City of Hobart has launched a three-year Safe City Liaison trial focused on community safety and engagement in the CBD. Its 1 October 2026 announcement describes a visible, approachable service for businesses, residents, visitors and partner agencies.
Three liaison officers will work with local businesses, community members and service providers. Their tasks include identifying emerging concerns, gathering information on safety and amenity, offering reassurance and helping people reach relevant support services. Regular patrols are planned during business hours.
The team complements Tasmania Police rather than replacing police responsibilities. Officers will also operate alongside council compliance, security services and CCTV. A focus is connecting vulnerable people with homelessness, youth, health and community support. Council says the trial draws on comparable Perth and Melbourne programs adapted for Hobart; its launch is not yet evidence of measured safety outcomes.
