Published · Cenlocal summary
A 14-week partnership involving City of Darwin, Parap Market and EcoMob diverted more than 2.7 tonnes of food waste from landfill, and the market plans to continue the collection scheme.

A 14-week food-waste trial at Parap Market diverted more than 2.7 tonnes of scraps from landfill, City of Darwin reported on 13 October 2026. More than 20 stallholders participated, with an average of 197 kilograms collected each week.
Stallholders separated scraps before moving them to a central collection point. EcoMob collected and dehydrated the material, which was converted into organic fertiliser for local farms and gardens. Council estimates the pilot avoided 5.8 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions.
The trial was a partnership between City of Darwin, Parap Market and EcoMob. Council says the market will continue the collection scheme and explore wider participation after positive feedback. The reported quantities describe the completed pilot; a scale or timetable for expansion has not been announced.
