Laksa has a special place in Darwin. The spicy, coconut-rich noodle soup is found at markets, cafés and restaurants across the city, and for many locals it is simply part of weekend life. Throughout October 2026, the Darwin International Laksa Festival celebrates that connection.

A month of laksa

The festival runs from 1 to 31 October 2026. During the month, participating restaurants, cafés and eateries serve their own versions of laksa, along with creative laksa-inspired dishes. Visitors can follow a Laksa Food Tour between venues, and the festival's Laksa League lets people check in at venues, vote for favourite dishes and earn points towards prizes. Entry to the festival is free.

Grand Finale on the waterfront

The festival finishes with a Grand Finale on the Darwin Waterfront Lawns on Saturday 31 October 2026. Organisers are planning an afternoon of cooking demonstrations, storytelling, hawker-style night markets, food trucks and challenges, with the People's Choice and Golden Bowl awards presented on the day.

Why it matters for local businesses

Laksa's popularity says a lot about Darwin, a city shaped by its Asian neighbours and its many multicultural communities. Many of the venues behind the city's food scene are small, locally owned businesses. A festival that sends people from one local eatery to the next is a good reason to try somewhere new and support the people who cook for the community.
