The City of Perth has been named a Highly Commended Finalist in the 2026 AIPH World Green City Awards for its Urban Greening Strategy.

The City of Perth's work to make the city greener has been recognised internationally. The City reports that it was named a Highly Commended Finalist at the 2026 AIPH World Green City Awards, in the Urban Infrastructure & Liveability category.
According to the City, Perth was the only Australian city to place in the top three of any award category. Sheffield in the United Kingdom won the category, with Perth and Vitacura in Chile both Highly Commended.
About the strategy
The recognition relates to the Urban Greening Strategy 2023–2036, which the City says brings together tree planting, more open space and water-sensitive design to increase canopy, reduce heat and create cooler streets. Its stated vision is that by 2036 Perth city will be greener, cooler and more resilient.
Initiatives listed by the City include:
- expanding tree canopy through the Urban Forest infill program across streets, parks and public spaces
- community greening activities such as Tree Month and National Tree Day
- new green infrastructure, including pocket parks
- showcasing Western Australian flora in malls and prominent public places
- reimagining road reserves as biodiversity corridors.
The City is also managing its urban forest to protect tree health, including against Polyphagous Shot-Hole Borer and the effects of a changing climate.
Longer-term goals
The City's Urban Forest Plan 2016–2036 aims to increase canopy cover across the public realm to 30 per cent. Lord Mayor Bruce Reynolds said the City had planted more trees and plants over the past 18 months than at any other time in its recorded history.
