Curtin unveils virtual production studio for emerging filmmakers
Published · Cenlocal summary
A new LED production facility gives Curtin students access to digital filmmaking technology and international screen collaborations.

Curtin University unveiled a virtual production facility on 14 October 2026, giving Perth’s emerging filmmakers new ways to create screen environments. The Virtual Production Studio and Digital Creative Industries facility has an eight-metre by eight-metre LED space.
Wall and floor screens can place performers inside digital environments, supporting visual effects, animation and extended reality work. Curtin describes the installation as Western Australia’s first back and floor LED volume configured to industry standards. The university says it will support teaching, research and collaboration with creative businesses.
The launch also introduced a collaboration between Curtin, Singapore’s Oceanus Media Global and Australian filmmaker Paul Barron. Students and staff will have opportunities for work-integrated learning on Barron’s upcoming Australia-Singapore-Malaysia co-production. Curtin says students in its existing Oceanus partnership earned professional screen credits on a feature film in 2025 before graduating. The new facility builds on that pathway; its WA-first status is the university’s claim.
