Newcastle reports $137.4 million in capital works
Published · Cenlocal summary
Council has outlined its 2025/26 infrastructure spending and draft financial results, distinguishing ongoing performance from one-off effects.

City of Newcastle says it delivered $137.4 million in capital works during the 2025/26 financial year, with investment spanning roads, recreation facilities, transport and neighbourhood upgrades.
Figures released on 22 October 2026 alongside draft audited financial statements list $30.1 million for road rehabilitation and major road upgrades, including work at Longworth Avenue and Minmi Road in Wallsend.
Other spending included $17.7 million on recreation and sport projects, $12.2 million on revitalisation projects and $6.7 million on transport. Of the transport allocation, $3.8 million went towards dedicated cycleway infrastructure.
Council also identified completion of the expanded Newcastle Art Gallery as a major achievement during the year.
The draft statements reported an underlying operating surplus of about $1 million, compared with a total surplus of $18 million including one-off effects.
Council attributed the larger result to factors including advance payment of federal Financial Assistance Grants, stronger investment returns and better-than-expected Newcastle Airport performance. The early grant payment added $5.7 million to the result.
These figures are attributed to council’s 22 October draft-statements announcement and are not presented here as subsequently adopted final accounts.
