Longer days make spring a great time to explore Melbourne outdoors. Here are some ideas based on confirmed City of Melbourne listings and recent openings.
Gardens and parks
- Fitzroy Gardens – Wonder and Whimsy. A kids' activity exploring the gardens, listed until 4 October.
- Design X Nature. A free outdoor exhibition of artworks exploring how natural systems inform creative practice, until 18 October.
- ACCA forecourt, Southbank. A new green space of more than 900 square metres, with lawn, seating, native trees and wildflowers, has opened at the corner of Sturt and Grant streets.
For families
- Birrarung Marr playground has reopened after a City of Melbourne upgrade, with new slides, a basket swing, climbing nets, a log trail and more than 40 new trees.
- The City's What's On site also has a regularly updated list of free and low-cost family activities.
After dark
- Stellar Nights – guided tours at the Observatory exploring time and space, listed until 30 November.
- NGV Friday Nights – live music, film, food and drink, listed until 2 October.
