Adelaide Park Lands – Exploring the City's Green Spaces
Published · Updated · Cenlocal summary
The National Heritage-listed Park Lands wrap Adelaide in green, with 29 parks and six city squares to explore.

Adelaide is famous for its Park Lands, a ring of green space that surrounds the city centre and North Adelaide in a figure of eight.
A city in a park
According to the City of Adelaide, Colonel William Light's design created the world's first planned "city in a park". The Adelaide Park Lands and City Layout were added to the National Heritage List in 2008.
What's there
The Park Lands include 29 parks and six city squares, covering around 932 hectares. You'll find:
- Sports ovals, courts and cycling trails
- Picnic and barbecue areas
- Designated dog parks
- Venues for major events such as WOMADelaide and Adelaide Fringe
City squares to visit
- Victoria Square / Tarntanyangga – the central square, used for events and picnics
- Whitmore Square / Iparrityi – with Moreton Bay figs, table tennis and a giant chess board
- Light Square / Wauwi – home to Colonel Light's burial site and memorial
- Wellington Square / Kudnartu – with rose beds and jacarandas
- Hindmarsh Square / Mukata – with an accessible playspace
Who manages them
The City of Adelaide manages about 80 per cent of the Park Lands. The rest, including the Botanic Garden and Botanic Park, is managed by the South Australian Government, advised by Kadaltilla / Park Lands Authority.
