Grant Stevens leaves police commissioner role before becoming SA Governor
Published · Cenlocal summary
The outgoing commissioner began leave on 23 October and is due to retire in December, ahead of his swearing-in as Governor of South Australia.

South Australia Police Commissioner Grant Stevens left active service on 23 October 2026 after more than a decade in the top role and a 44-year SAPOL career. Police say he is taking leave until his official retirement on 8 December.
Stevens is scheduled to be sworn in as Governor of South Australia on 9 December. SAPOL describes him as the first commissioner appointed to the vice-regal office. Deputy Commissioner Linda Williams is acting commissioner during the transition.
He joined SAPOL as a cadet on 7 January 1982. His earlier work included patrols in Para Hills, Adelaide and Elizabeth, followed by investigative roles in Elizabeth and Norwood and the Drug Task Force. The governor appointment is still prospective: the December dates are announced plans, not events that have already occurred.
